Make It a Masterpiece

Comply With Your Local Homeowner’s Association

If you own or rent a home in an HOA community, review the guidelines before finalizing your shed. Requirements may cover storage shed colors, siding materials, roofing, size, style or placement.

Some communities also require accessory buildings to match or complement the primary residence.

Use those requirements to your advantage. If your shed needs to coordinate with your house, start with the home’s existing siding, trim and roof colors. That gives you a smaller palette to work with and can make the decision much easier.

If you rent a house, condo or other property, there may be additional requirements for whether a storage shed is allowed and where it can be placed. Condo communities may also have association requirements that apply to the property.
