One goal we had during our renovations was to create a quiet place for people to concentrate or become inspired if they wanted to get away from their normal work space. We put in a solid desk, good light, a comfortable chair, and a view out over historic Galena. It's the kind of spot where you could actually get things done: answer a few emails, work on something you've been putting off, write, whatever you need.

Want to get outside during your Galena trip? Good news...you've got options!

If you like wide open views, Casper Bluff Nature Preserve is worth the drive. Prairie, big sky, plenty of room to roam. If you'd rather stay close to town, the Galena River Trail is an easy, flat walk right along the water, with the historic buildings and bridges in view the whole time.

Labor Day weekend is almost here! A three-day weekend is the perfect excuse to get away to Galena.

Picture Galena as an early lead miner or fur trader might have seen it: a town built by hardworking hands, its streets carved out by the labor of miners, tradesmen, rivermen, and the families who worked to make a life here. This Labor Day, we're honoring the workforce that built Galena from the ground up.

The Dowling House (pictured) still stands as a piece of that story. It served as a fur trading post in Galena's earliest days, when the town's fortunes rose on the backs of the people who worked its river and mined its hills. Galena itself takes its name from galena, the lead-sulfide mineral that generations of miners pulled from the ground to build this town.
