According to , this lovely flower gets its name from the Greek Goddess Iris, the Goddess of the Rainbow. This golden-winged goddess, who traveled to earth on a rainbow, would leave a trail of beautiful flowering plants where her feet touched the ground.

This gorgeous wallpaper is going up in Room 3, The Catharine. This guest room has an original marble mantel and is named for Catharine Felt who built this beautiful Second Empire home with her husband Lucius in the mid 1800s.

Happy 203rd birthday, Catharine!

Catharine E Sullivan was born on this day in 1823 in the state of New York. She married Lucius S Felt in 1845, and they traveled west to Galena, Illinois where they raised their family in the home we now call Felt Manor. Catharine became a widow in 1876 and lived out her remaining years in Galena.

Here is an excerpt from an article that appeared in the Galena Daily Gazette on March 4, 1889 following her sudden death at age 65:

“Catharine was a lady of rare qualities of mind and heart. Endowed by nature with an evenly balanced mind and a lovable disposition, she enjoyed advantages of education and society which ripened these qualities, and produced a most worthy type of womanhood. In the family, in society, and in the church, she came as near to the model of womanhood as frail humanity attains. She was a valued member of the South Presbyterian Church where her counsel and assistance in every good work will be greatly missed. The family sustains a loss that can never be repaired.”
