Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Larry and Angela Milsteadt of Pekin, Illinois! Larry and Angela were married here at Cloran Mansion over the weekend. Our extremely wet September forced everything indoors, but it was a beautiful ceremony nonetheless for this wonderful couple. Wishing you many years of continued happiness!

They grow up so fast! Four years ago this month, we bought these Green Giant Arborvitae to plant on our property along Franklin Avenue. They were all five feet tall. They are now about 18 feet and starting to look like what we imagined when we started out. There have been a lot of other lovely sights in the garden these past few months. Today we celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States. Because the Cloran Mansion was being completed in the summer of 1880, that would make this 4th of July the 146th it has been around to celebrate!

It got me thinking about what was going on the year the Cloran Mansion saw its first Independence Day. So here are some fast facts to help make you a big hit at today's picnic or parade:

* Life expectancy was in the early 40s. This was largely because of high child mortality.
* The average workweek was 60 hours. Average wages for unskilled labor was about $400-500 per year (about $13,000 to $16,000 in today's dollars.)
*There were 38 states in the Union and about 50 million people. In 1880, New York became the first U.S. city to cross the 1 million threshold.
*About 13% of the U.S. population had been born in another country.
* 49% of Americans made their living from farming.
* U.S. Grant was spending his summer in Galena after having completed his world tour.
* The population of Galena was 6,400, more than double what it is today but half of what it had been during its heyday as a mining city.
* Thomas Edison received his patent for the incandescent lamp. Complaints about electric bills were still a ways away.
* At his store on Main Street, John Cloran was selling coffee for about 25 cents per pound, soap for about 5 cents per cake, and a hundred pound sack of flour for somewhere between $2.50 and $5.00.

We had a wonderful day yesterday celebrating a renewal of wedding vows with Anthony and Megan Aurrichio. What it made it extra special was that Anthony and Megan were married here at Cloran Mansion seven years to the day! In fact, they told me that they were wearing exactly what they wore seven years ago. That seemed a little like bragging, but we will let that go! Congratulations to a wonderful couple, and many happy years ahead!

Great timing for a wedding! Congratulations to Calvin and Olivia Drew on their marriage vows here at Cloran Mansion over the weekend. Considering all the storms both before and after their special day, I would say their timing was impeccable. All the best for a lifetime of happiness, and may the storm clouds be few and far between!

The Tri-State Wind Symphony opened its 32nd season under blue skies on Thursday evening. The Symphony performs five free summer concerts every other Thursday evening along the beautiful banks of the Mississippi River in Dubuque.

The historic Dubuque Star Brewing Company building adds to the ambience. And the Stone Cliff Winery next door provides an opportunity for food and libations. For those looking to take a stroll before or after the concerts, the Mississippi River Walk is adjacent to the concert venue.

Remaining concerts will be performed on June 18, July 2, July 16 and July 30. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. More information is available at tsws.org.

The Symphony consists of over 100 musicians playing for nothing more than their love of music. We hope you have the opportunity to enjoy a performance this summer!
