The Tri-State Wind Symphony opened its 32nd season under blue skies on Thursday evening. The Symphony performs five free summer concerts every other Thursday evening along the beautiful banks of the Mississippi River in Dubuque.

The historic Dubuque Star Brewing Company building adds to the ambience. And the Stone Cliff Winery next door provides an opportunity for food and libations. For those looking to take a stroll before or after the concerts, the Mississippi River Walk is adjacent to the concert venue.

Remaining concerts will be performed on June 18, July 2, July 16 and July 30. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. More information is available at tsws.org.

The Symphony consists of over 100 musicians playing for nothing more than their love of music. We hope you have the opportunity to enjoy a performance this summer!

It's such a positive jolt when Orioles return to the Galena area in the spring. Not only are they a spectacular color, but their singing voice matches their beauty. Here is one the other day looking for a sugary treat on our deck.

Want to give a shout-out today to Mackenzie Ward here in Galena for the wonderful job she did creating high school graduation cookies for a grand-nephew before he heads off to the University of Illinois in the fall. The cookies were a big hit at the party -- not only did they look terrific but they tasted great! Thank you Mackenzie for. the fantastic creations!

It is always a wonderful time when the crab apple trees come into bloom. After last week's nasty weather, though, it seems even more delightful this year. Happy Earth Day!

Yesterday we finished the work on updates to Sara's Room. A few weeks ago, we took down some border wallpaper in the bathroom, repainted the bathroom and main room, re-worked some wall decor, and installed a new comfort height toilet that should be a little more user friendly.

Installation of a new carpet was completed yesterday. Thank you to Knautz Flooring in Galena for their work on this. We hope that guests staying in Sara's will find a fresh and relaxing new look to enjoy!

Today remembering Kathie Farlow, who passed away yesterday in Georgia. She had moved there recently from Galena with her husband Jess to be closer to family.

It is impossible to think of Kathie except with a smile. Former owner with Jess of Farmers Guest House, she was lovingly committed to Galena and its success, and her ability to make volunteers appear for all kinds of Galena events was legendary. She was the kind of person a small city like Galena depends on in order to thrive, even if thousands of guests who visited Galena didn't know her name.

Galena has missed both Kathie and Jess since their move. But we are thankful for all that they gave this city to help make it what it is today, a welcoming and bustling destination to visit.

On Tuesday, March 3, the Bed & Breakfast Innkeepers of Galena will be hosting a concert to benefit the Galena Food Pantry. We hope you will join us for what promises to be an entertaining evening at Turner Hall!

The concert accompanied by movie clips will last approximately 80-90 minutes. Great musicians and a great cause!

Well, it took a while, but we finally completed the updates that we began in late January to the upper level of the bathroom in Tower Room. This is the second floor of the bathroom where the private whirlpool bath tub is located. (The lower level of the bathroom has a walk-in shower, pedestal sink, and toilet). We hope you enjoy the little slide show.

It really is kind of amazing to sit in the whirlpool bath tub and look up past the chandelier to the wood-paneled interior of the old tower of the house, built all the way back in 1880. The view comes with some bath salts and an electric fireplace to warm things up a bit on a cold winter night! The glow from the fireplace off the mirrors next to the tub give things a kind of magical feel. For those staying in Tower Room, we hope it all makes your visit to Galena extra special!

The Bed & Breakfast Innkeepers of Galena is pleased to announce that it will be sponsoring a concert fundraiser for the Galena Food Pantry on Tuesday, March 3 at Turner Hall.

This concert will feature live music from the Loras College Wind Ensemble, the Loras Choir, and the New Horizons Band, set to film clips from a host of family-friendly movies. The musicians are under the direction of Professor Glenn Pohland of Loras College. He does a tremendous job each year synchronizing the music to the film clips and leading a great orchestra of talented musicians.

Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased by scanning the QR code on the flyer or by calling Paul at the Cloran Mansion Bed & Breakfast, 815-777-0583. Attendees are also asked to bring a non-perishable item to be donated to the Food Pantry.

The concert begins promptly at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available. The event will last approximately 90 minutes.

As the flyer notes, the second half of the program will feature music entirely from Wicked.

This promises to be a terrific event, with proceeds going to support the outstanding work of the Galena Food Pantry. Please purchase your tickets in advance. We look forward to seeing you there!

The temperatures outside this January have made it a good time to take on some projects inside! The first big one has been taking on the tower of the house, where the whirlpool bath tub is located for Tower Room. For the unfamiliar, that's the second floor of the bathroom in Tower Room.

The main part of the project was stripping off the wallpaper and then doing a little faux painting in blue. I think it came out pretty well, and I am hoping it provides a fresh look after having done the lower part of the Tower bathroom last January. Just waiting on a couple of wall accents, and we'll be done.

For those who have been coming to Cloran Mansion a long time, no worries, you can see that the horse is still there. We have no desire to change that out. Even if we did, I think we would need a bigger ladder.
