Confession time: My Harley is sitting in the garage, dead as a doornail. 😢 Nothing sadder for a motorcycle guy than knowing that his inattention let a bike slowly die. My GF Alice is happy about it though

My Galveston Blue Pearl is already booked for Rally weekend, but if you haven't been to this incredible event, you really should consider a visit. The island is buzzing, the bikes are amazing, and the atmosphere is hard to beat!

The legendary tall ship ELISSA, built in 1877, celebrates her 149th birthday on October 24! But first, she’s heading back out to sea for her annual Daysail Series, October 21–24. ⚓

🍂🌊 Fall Is My Favorite Time of Year on Galveston Island! 🌊🍂

I love the heat, but by the time September rolls around, I’ve had enough! 😂 Fall is my favorite time of year on the island. The weather gets a little more comfortable, the beach is still beautiful, and there’s so much to do! In fact, the beach water temp today is still 78 degrees. (When I lived in Maryland years ago,mid seventies was about the summer max!)

October has already brought us 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗧, the monthly 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸, and the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹. And the fun isn’t over yet! 🍺 I𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗸𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁 is coming this weekend, followed by 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶́𝗮 𝗱𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯𝟭. 🎨🌼

𝗚𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟵-𝟮𝟬, and it's worth planning around if you're into a fun beach weekend.

More than 25 teams turn the sand into towering sculptures using nothing but sand and water — it's one of the largest amateur sandcastle competitions in the world. On top of the competition, there's live music, food trucks, art vendors, a kids' zone, and even hands-on lessons with professional sandcastle builders. Sculptures stick around through Sunday too, so if you go the second day you'll get to see everything up close with smaller crowds.

If you're making a weekend of it, 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹 on the West End is a easy, low-key spot to base yourselves — not far from all the beach action but still quiet enough to unwind after a day in the sand.

If you're on the island and love a piece of history, keep an eye out — the 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻.

The USS Texas, the last surviving dreadnought battleship from World War I and one of the last ships still standing that served in both world wars, has been undergoing a major restoration nearby. After years of back-and-forth over where she'd end up, Galveston Wharves settled on Pier 15 — just a short walk from Pier 21 and the Strand — as her final berth.

I had taken both of my sons to see her decades ago when she was berthed at San Jac Battleground in LaPorte. She can be seen in her current dry dock state across from the wharf restaurants.

She's not open yet, but once she's moved and restoration wraps up, Galveston will be home to one of the most historically significant ships still afloat. Worth watching for if you're into naval history or just like seeing these old giants up close

𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗦 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗞𝗜𝗗𝗦! 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 are an ongoing Saturday event.
But heads up — the season wraps up September 5, so there are only a few weekends left to catch it.

Lessons are held at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. near the water's edge, right in front of the East Beach Pavilion. No registration needed — just grab your sunscreen, bring the kids, and join in.

If you're on the island this week, 𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗔 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲.

The 1877 tall ship has been sailing up the East Coast as part of the Galveston 250 celebrations, and she's finally returning to her berth at the Galveston Historic Seaport. There's a small homecoming reception planned to welcome her back and thank the crew and volunteers who made the voyage happen.

Worth a stop if you love Galveston history or just want to see a 19th-century tall ship sail back into harbor — not something you get to see every day.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗶𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. The meteor shower peaks the night of August 12 into the early hours of August 13 — and this year the timing is ideal, since it lines up with a new moon, so there's no moonlight to wash out the sky.

I'll be up on the top deck at Blue Pearl for it. No city lights, wide open sky over the Gulf, and a front-row seat without having to go anywhere. Best viewing is late night into the hours just before dawn, roughly midnight to 4 or 5 a.m., when the meteor rates are highest.

If you're staying on the island this week, worth stepping outside after dark and looking up.

The 2026 Persied meteor shower could be the best one in years, thanks to a new moon that will also cause a total solar eclipse on Aug. 12.
