The Sunrise in got some TLC recently. A house that is over 100 years old need lots of love.

The Sunrise in is just blocks from the beach and the Sea-mist, sand, and wind can beat up a house inside and out.

The latest Work Camp completed many tasks.

We discovered the thrill of replacing window weights. We started with the kitchen windows. The windows have to be taken completely apart and then repaired and repainted.

The 2 year project of building a new blow through was finished.

Several windows were scrapped and painted.

Tiles in the parkay floor were replaced.

The kitchen was painted and new molding installed.

New decor was added and fresh new curtains hung.

Gave the gardens some TLC after the February Freeze. Most plants survived. For the first time in 9 years the is Texas wildflowers are coming up the garden.

Out door decor got a fresh coat of paint.

New lighting added to the back yard and back of the garage.

An old bike found a new home.

We found an old headboard and dresser back in the attic and gave them new life and hung them in the Fitzgerald Room.

The Sunrise in all its Southern Charm and Beach Vibe is ready for your stay.

Heat your home up safely. Be mindful of sources of Carbon Monoxide.

Don’t kill yourself to keep warm.

Be smart about how you heat.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning risks spike in winter due to increased use of furnaces, generators, and fireplaces, combined with poor ventilation. As a colorless, odorless, and tasteless "silent killer," CO is responsible for many, often fatal, poisoning incidents. Key precautions include keeping vents clear of snow, installing detectors, and never running generators/vehicles in enclosed spaces.

To keep your home and family safe this winter, following these safety guidelines:

*Have furnaces and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually.
*Clear snow away from outside dryer and heating vents.
*Always place generators at least 20 feet away from the house, never in a garage or basement.
*Never idle a car in a closed garage.
*Install, test, and replace batteries in CO detectors for every floor of the home.
*Look for CO poisoning symptoms including headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion, sometimes mistaken for the flu.
*If a detector sounds or symptoms appear, leave the home immediately and then call 911.

Galveston Texas the Birthplace of Juneteenth and is Commemorated with a mural in Galveston, Texas, where the holiday began.

The "Absolute Equality" mural was finished in 2021 and it was on this site in June 19, 1865, that Union Army General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived to formally inform the enslaved Black and African American people of Galveston and that the Emancipation Proclamation had freed them.

The order read:
“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”

The President Lincoln had passed the proclamation more than two years prior. Geographically and culturally, Texas was a removed slave state whose slave owners resisted the proclamation. A combined of a low number of Union troops in Texas, acknowledgment, and enforcement of the proclamation the process was slow and inconsistent.

The importance of June 19th in Texas is that was the day freedom was for all the people of Texas.

The mural depicts slavery as is began in the United States, some of the historical figures and the last circle represents the journey Opal Lee embarked on to make June 19th a National Holiday. Opel in now in her late nineties and is known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth. Over a decade of determination to make June 19th a holiday she decided to go on a walking campaign in cities along a route from her home in Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C. It wasn't a straight line. Over several weeks, Lee arrived in cities where she'd been invited to speak and walked 2½ miles to symbolize the 2½ years that it took for enslaved people in Texas to learn they were free.
