We have been closed for almost 8 months now. We miss seeing some wonderful guest, but it feels great to sleep in and not have to fix breakfast EVERY morning.

The bears came to tell us goodby.

We have enjoyed our time as innkeepers. However, after 16 years of Innkerping we have sold our inn, The Foxtrot B&B, in Gatlinburg. We were thinking of retiring sometime, but someone made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. It was only listed for 1 day and we had multiple offers. When the dust settled, we were offered more than we were asking. The last day of June was our last day of operation and July 1st was our last breakfast. What we will miss most are the many wonderful guest we have met over the years. We are staying in Gatlinburg, just downsizing to a condominium. Thanks for the memories.

With 150 official trails in the Smokies, it can become overwhelming to decide where to go. Start by determining what you would like to see. Waterfalls? Old-growth forests? Endless views? Then decide how far you would like to hike. If you haven't hiked much recently, be conservative. Five miles roundtrip is a good maximum distance for novices. Grotto Falls, Hen Wallow Falls, and Laurel Falls are easy to moderate waterfall hikes within that five-mile distance. You can find popular mountain views on trails like Charlies Bunion, Alum Cave Bluffs, Andrews Bald, Rainbow Falls, and Chimney Tops. No matter which hike you choose, you should follow our hiking safety tips:

1. Be sure to allow plenty of time to complete your hike before dark.
2. Remember, cell phones do not work in most places in the park, and GPS is sometimes unreliable. Therefore, you should carry a park trail map and know how to read it.
3. Bring water! Staying hydrated is important.
4. Wear shoes or boots that provide good ankle support.

We had a Mom and 3 Cubs visit this morning.

Our guest captured this film clip tonight. They watched him down in the backyard and then he came up and went across our deck downstairs. Then he came upstairs and went to the back deck to get some cat food. After that he walked across the driveway headed to the patio out back.

Did you know that Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to more than 100 native tree species? Yes, you read that number correctly! From towering tulip poplars to small redbuds; from common sugar maples to rare loblolly pines; and from high-elevation Fraser firs to low-elevation sweetgums, beautiful and unique trees abound.

What’s your favorite kind of tree in the Smokies?

NPS photo, circa 1959. Tulip poplar tree, also called yellow poplar.
