Did you know Townsend, Tennessee, has a history that reaches back thousands of years?
Long before Townsend became a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Little River Valley was home to Indigenous peoples, including the Cherokee. The surrounding area, known as Tuckaleechee Cove, was a place where people lived, traveled, hunted, and farmed for generations. 🏔️
European-American settlers began arriving in the late 1700s and early 1800s, establishing farms and homesteads throughout the fertile valleys. Families built log homes, raised livestock, and lived closely connected to the land and seasons.
Townsend later grew alongside the logging industry and railroad, adding another fascinating chapter to its Appalachian history.
Today, Townsend is affectionately known as the “Peaceful Side of the Smokies.” 🌲 It’s the perfect place to slow down, explore Appalachian history, enjoy the Little River, and experience a different side of the Great Smoky Mountains.
