Lawman and gunfighter Dan Tucker was born in Canada in 1849.
Somewhere along the line, he made his way to the American West, eventually earning the nickname “Dangerous Dan” for his deadly shooting skills.
He first appeared in Grant County, NM in the early 1870s. Though some were suspicious of the slight, soft-spoken man, who was rumored to have killed a man in Colorado before arriving in NM, Sheriff Harvey Whitehill took a liking to him and hired him on as a deputy sheriff in 1875!

The rock formations City of Rocks State Park are so unique that they are only known to exist in six other places in the world. Formed of volcanic ash 30 million years ago and sculpted by wind and water into rows of monolithic blocks, City of Rocks State Park takes its name from these incredible rock formations. Cactus gardens and hiking trails add to this unique destination.

Fun Fact:
”Gila” is pronounced HEE-luh (rhymes with "healer") or Hee-lah, with a soft 'H' sound at the beginning, not a hard 'G' sound (like "Gee-luh"). The name comes from the O'odham language, meaning "running water which is salty," and the 'G' sound was adopted by Spanish speakers but retains its original soft pronunciation
