Spring in Leelanau means asparagus. Norconk Farms () cuts them in the morning. Laura brines them in the afternoon. By suppertime they're in jars on the counter, working their way toward the cheese and charcuterie boards. Sharp, salty, with the bite still in them.

Norconk's is selling at the Empire Asparagus Festival next Saturday, June 6, ten miles south on M-22. So is Art's Tavern Glen Arbor. Right Brain () is pouring. There's a 5K called "Kick-yer-Assparagus." There's a poetry contest at the library called "Ode to Asparagus." There's an Asparagus Queen on stilts. Empire knows what it has. Because when a town goes to this much trouble for the first green thing out of the ground, you go.

Big Glen Condo has open dates in June. June is the month before the village fills up: cooler water, quieter trails, restaurant patios you can walk into without a wait.

Big Glen finished in 2024, two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, two stories. The second bathroom is the part most condos can’t offer; it’s the only space on the property with two. Full kitchen, fireplace, washer/dryer, dishwasher, patio downstairs, deck off the upstairs.

Laura, our innkeeper, lives next door in Little Glen if anything comes up. Breakfast at the B&B is available for $20 per person, delivered or at the table.

Today we remember those who didn’t come home. Whatever we get to do this weekend exists because of someone who didn’t. The cookouts. Being on the lakes. The long evenings.

The door at Art’s slaps shut and doesn’t stop slapping until September.

That’s how you know.

Memorial Day weekend in Glen Arbor is when the town wakes up. The band at Boondocks fires up on the deck. Boats come off blocks and back into Big Glen, where the water is still cold enough to make you swear out loud.

We call it the soft open. Three months of dune climbs, sunburns, sandy floorboards, and long northern light that hangs over the lake until almost ten.

It starts this weekend.
