2025 marked two centuries since one of Texas’ most historic towns was founded in 1825 by Empresario Green DeWitt. Gonzales was the first Anglo-American settlement west of the Colorado River and served as the capital of DeWitt’s colony. The town took its name from Rafael Gonzales, governor of Coahuila y Texas.

The legacy of Gonzales places it at the heart of Texas’ path to statehood. On October 2, 1835, the first shot of the Texas Revolution thundered from a six-pound cannon—a weapon provided initially by the Mexican government to help settlers defend against local Comanche and Tonkawa tribes.

When Mexican troops later demanded the cannon’s return, the people of Gonzales stood firm, raising a handmade flag that declared, “Come and Take It.” The skirmish that followed at the Battle of Gonzales marked the first true revolt of Texas colonists against the ruling government, igniting the state’s march toward independence.

Today, Gonzales offers a far friendlier atmosphere, surrounded by icons of Texas’ storied past. The city’s historic homes, lively festivals, and beautifully preserved downtown reflect its enduring heritage.

Plan a trip to explore its landmarks, museums, and events that continue to tell the story of Texas independence: https://texastimetravel.com/cities/gonzales/
