Today's is not a Summer Camp Memory Lane post. Nope, it's a
Winter Camp Memory Lane post.
Did you know that Westview also offers Winter Camp. This year, it is the weekend of December 18-20. It is an opportunity for kids to get a little Westview during the school year, and it is a great opportunity for parents to finish up that last minute shopping right before Christmas!
Registration for Winter Camp opens today!

Today we are taking a deeper look at The Signpost.
Started in the early 90's, this tradition has become a very big part of Westview culture.
Every summer, during staff training, counselors get to make a sign with their name on it. It is an opportunity for staff to express their individuality.
The Signpost has grown quite a bit over the years. What first started out as a single post with a handful of signs has grown into a full blown arch of counselors.
Come see The Signpost and more at our 60th Anniversary Celebration this Saturday.

For today's trip down Memory Lane we are looking at only one single picture. How many people remember when Westview had its very own teepee? This is the only picture I have found so far with it. I remember helping to set it up during staff training one summer, but I do not remember where it was or why we had it, or what happened to it.
If you remember more info about the teepee, please share it in the comments.
While you are doing that, consider coming out for our 60th Anniversary Celebration.

Today I wanted to talk a little about the Flags of the Dining Hall.
Originally, the flags that flew inside the walls of the Dining Hall represented the countries of our International Staff. If the flag hung on a pole, there was a representative from that country working on staff that summer, and if the flag hung flat against the wall, it represented the countries of past International Staff.

It has been a few years since Westview has hosted any International Staff, so we started a new tradition.

Now the flags that fly inside the D-Hall represent the colleges and universities of the senior level staff. We change them up every summer and leave them up for a year. The closer the flag hangs to the double doors of the Fireplace Side, the greater the representation of that school on staff that summer.

As the leaders of Westview, I can tell you that we do hope to one day have International Staff again, and when we do, instead of their country's flag, I guess we will fly the flag of their school too.

Come see this year's school flags in person at our 60th Anniversary Celebration!

This morning's trip down Memory Lane is looking at the Parent Program.
Originally held as a full on dinner at the River Shelter, it was where the campers got to share with their parents some of the fun they had at camp that week.
After the Hogan Hill Shelter was built, the Parent Program moved there and by that point, camp had grown so big that serving dinner was not very feasible anymore, so instead, cookies and fruit was offered.
The Year that Shall Not be Named forced Westview to make some very significant changes to the overall operation of camp, and for a time, the Parent Program was not held.
Three years ago, we brought it back, but with a fresh new take. However, it still provides great closure for the camper and gives the parents a little bit of info on the week of camp.

Join us for our Friends and Family Camping Event, Labor Day weekend. It also coincides with our 60th Anniversary!

We are about 2 weeks away from Westview's 60th Anniversary Celebration on Sept 5th.

I thought it would be fun to just look back at some Staff group shots over the years. Do you recognize any of the staff in these pics?

Want to see more? We will have a whole physical Photo Gallery set up at the event, and you will be able to take away any picture you want from the collection.

Sign up for the event here:

Today, as we head towards Westview's 60th Anniversary Celebration, let's take a look at the evolution of the Climbing Wall. We have had three in our years. Did you climb the first, second, or third wall? Maybe you are like me, and actually climbed all 3.

If you come out on September 5th, you can test your skills on our current wall.

This is fun, let's keep it going by looking at the evolution of the hogans.

What was your favorite hogan? Was it a chicken coop or one with it's own bathroom.

Want to stay in a hogan and relive your youth? You can register for the whole Friends & Family Camping Event. It will coincide with the 60th celebrations.

Lets check out the evolution of the pools of Westview. That's right, I said, "pools", plural. The Z shaped pool we all know and love is not Westview's first pool. There was another.

If you come to our 60th Anniversary Celebration, you might be able to dip your toes in the pool.

Let's look at the evolution of the Wade Dining Hall from the early 80's to Now! Do you remember the red floor, the screened walls, or when the Fireplace Side was legitimately the "New Side"?
