Practical AI #2 — Using AI to decode your insurance policy
How to Actually Understand What Your Insurance Covers
Most people never read their insurance policy until they need to file a claim — and by then, it's too late to fix a gap in coverage.
Insurance policies are written in dense, technical language on purpose. Terms like "endorsement," "exclusion," and "classification" can hide exactly what you're — and aren't — covered for. AI is genuinely great at cutting through that.
Here's how to put it to work:
1. Upload or paste in your policy documents. Most AI tools (Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude) can read a PDF or scanned policy and summarize it in plain English. Ask it: "What does this policy actually cover, and what does it exclude?"
2. Ask it to translate the confusing parts. If a section uses jargon you don't understand, just paste that paragraph and ask: "Explain this in plain language." AI is excellent at this — it won't get impatient, and you can ask as many follow-up questions as you need.
3. Ask it to find the gaps. This is the most valuable part. Ask directly: "Based on this policy, what situations might NOT be covered?" Insurance policies are often restricted in ways people don't expect — coverage tied to a specific platform or program, limits that only apply to certain types of work, or exclusions buried in a footnote.
4. Build a list of questions for your agent. AI can't give you legal or insurance advice, and it can't confirm anything with certainty — only your insurance agent or company can do that. But it can help you walk into that conversation with sharp, specific questions instead of a vague "am I covered?" That alone can save you an hour of back-and-forth.
5. Do this before you need it, not after. The whole point is catching a gap while it's still just a question — not during a claim, when it's already too late to fix.
Quick note: AI can't read your mind or your insurer's fine print with 100% certainty, and it's not a substitute for talking to your actual agent or attorney. But as a first pass to understand what you're looking at and know what to ask, it's a huge time-saver.
This is exactly the kind of thing I help with — using AI to research, organize, and make sense of confusing paperwork: insurance policies, tax abatements, benefit applications, government forms, you name it.
