I don’t know where to start… this place was Heaven (and not hideous in the least bit)! Very clean, spacious and comfortable. Loved the location, and don’t get me started on Kazzie (the owner), she is the best of the best! Made me feel like family. My only regret was not staying longer. We did end up staying one day extra, I just couldn’t bare toe leave it. I’ve rented many homes on all the different booking sites for both leisure and for work as a travel nurse and I have never had an experience like I had at CH! I have absolutely no complaints or suggestions to make this any better! The house was better stocked than my home I think lol!! The beds and furniture were very comfortable. I would have been happy just hanging out at the house but we went all over exploring the area. Already planning our return trip(s), I was so sad leaving. I wish all the hosts were as great as Kazzie is, she set the bar real high! If you are ever in the area looking for a place to stay, do yourself a favor and stay at camp hideous, you will not be sorry (just don’t rent it when I want to stay there 😜). Thanks again Kazzie, we can’t wait to be back! 🧡🦞🧡

In the 1920s, the most heavily armed boats on the Maine coast weren't Coast Guard cutters. They were low, gray, nearly silent speedboats built by a boatbuilder named Will Frost, working out of a shop on Beals Island.

Frost built rum runners and the Coast Guard boats sent to catch them, sometimes in the same season. His hulls carried aircraft engines, Sterling Vikings and Liberty motors putting out 565 horsepower, enough to push a 30 to 80 foot boat past 40 miles an hour through water the Coast Guard's slower craft simply couldn't match. One of his boats, the Good Luck, could run liquor from Jonesport to New Bedford in 22 hours. Crews painted their hulls gray, rigged small cabins and tiny portholes, and strung fishing nets across the deck so a patrol boat passing close would see what looked like just another lobster boat heading home.

It worked often enough that Prohibition turned Maine's rocky, fog-prone coast, with its hundreds of coves and uninhabited islands, into one of the busiest smuggling corridors in the country, supplied in part by French-held St. Pierre and Miquelon up in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. When the Coast Guard did catch a boat, like the Evelyne Ruth, the liquor onboard could be worth $30,000, real money in 1920s dollars. 🌊

Most of those boats are gone now, scrapped or lost to weather long ago. What's left is mostly in old photographs and a few family stories passed down in fishing towns like Jonesport and Beals. Did your family ever pass down a story like this, about the water, or about Prohibition?
