I was up at Grand Lake a couple of weekends ago with some friends… we had a wonderful time hiking in RMNP and paddle boarding on Shadow Mountain Lake. It is still weird renting another place while I’m there.

It’s been over 2 years since we have been to Grand Lake. We thought that time would heal the heartbreak of loosing Happy Moon Hideaway to the East Troublesome fire…but being back and seeing it all still causes an ache in our hearts.
It’s like a big open and exposed prairie now…lots of green and wild flowers. We found some baby pines too which made us smile. A few neighbors have rebuilt.
It’s time for us to decide what we are going to do with our old happy place.

The cloud of shock has been lifted over the loss of our beautiful Happy Moon Hideaway cabin. This week we had all the metal and ash removed from the site thanks to Colorado Baptist Disaster Relief and Ranch Creek Waste.
We will be working on removing the foundation and the grand chimney in the weeks to come.
It was a pleasant surprise to see the grasses, willows and wildflowers all showing their determination to thrive again. Several of our neighbors have begun the process to rebuild. As for us, we are taking a “pause” and pondering what our next steps will be.

Flash flooding on Tonahutu Creek piled up enough trees, mud and debris Saturday night to shut down Grand Lake’s hydro plant.
