With the official start to Fall just around the corner, weather in the high country can change in an instant. Please be prepared for all types of driving conditions and be aware that Trail Ridge Road can close temporarily due to winter weather conditions at any time.
❄️ Rocky Mountain National Park shared on September 20th that a storm system is heading our way, bringing wet and cold weather. Beginning tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday, be prepared for rain and cooler temperatures at lower elevations. At elevations above 9,000 feet in RMNP, be prepared for winter driving and snow. ❄️
Before coming to the park and driving over Trail Ridge Road or up Old Fall River Road, take time to call the Trail Ridge Road status line first at 970-586-1222. Park staff will update the recorded line if the road status changes.
Based on weather and hazardous driving conditions, Trail Ridge Road and Old Fall River Road can temporarily close at any time. Colorado Vehicle Traction Law may become active at any time.
What does this mean? When vehicle traction law is in effect, all vehicles (including 4-Wheel Drive, All-Wheel Drive, and 2-Wheel Drive) must have properly rated tires (Mud and Snow, Mountain and Snow or All-Weather Tires) with a minimum of 3/16” tread. If your vehicle does not have properly rated tires, you must use an approved traction control device. These may include snow chains, cables, tire/snow socks, or studded tires.
