Calling all Artists: Mapping Mystery March 28th --April 13th (Johnson Heritage Post)
What topic would promote reflection and expression around issues of creativity, spirituality and life in the north? Our committee came up with “Mapping Mystery.” So many of our best stories, we realized, about trips into the woods (or the world) recount surprises, challenges, even calamities. (Stories from folks in the BWCAW on July 4th, 1999 are collected into a book; stories of people who were there a week earlier are not!)
“Mapping Mystery”—some have been mystified by the topic (!) and have asked for ways to think about it. Here’s one option: think about a time when an outdoor adventure (or other travel experience) met with the unexpected. What problem did you have to solve? What did you learn about the world and yourself from that experience? How might you express that artistically?
Another would be to relate “Mapping Mystery” to your artistic endeavors. Think of a time when you’ve been creating—in words, paint or clay—and you’ve run out of materials and been forced to try something new. (A themed show like this one aims to do just this—to provide a topic that will challenge artists to see and express from a new angle.)
Or “Mapping Mystery” could be taken more symbolically. We want our life journeys to be smooth, but most of us have hit bumps: a frightening diagnosis, a relationship break up, or a loss. We don’t choose these disruptions; we wish they would go away. Yet when we look back, five or ten years later, we see that those experiences have been formative. What have you experienced that has re-shaped, strengthened and deepened you? How might you express this artistically?
Our show encourages artists to consider the intersection of creativity and spirituality. What does “Mapping Mystery” have to do with spirituality? While hard to define, spirituality is that in us which ‘rises to the occasion,’ that finds resources we didn’t know we had. Spirituality is about the sense we all have that “there’s more to life than meets the eye.”
We invite artists to express this in clay, paint, film, words, music, glass, fabric, etc. All work must be original and made for this show. For more information, see our website www.spiritofthewilderness.org. RSVP your participation by March 14th to [email protected].
