🌕 The Full Sturgeon Moon is almost here!

August’s Full Sturgeon Moon reaches its peak Friday, August 28, at 12:18 A.M. EDT. The name comes from a time of year when sturgeon were traditionally plentiful in the Great Lakes and other North American waters.

And there’s an extra reason to watch the sky this year: the full Moon coincides with a partial lunar eclipse, giving skywatchers an even more memorable August night.

What is the "Log Slide"? 🪵

Today, when you visit the Log Slide Overlook, you get stunning views of Lake Superior, the Grand Sable Dunes, and Au Sable Point. If you could travel back in time to over a century ago, the Log Slide would have been buzzing with activity. Beginning in the late 1800s through the 1920s, logging was a prominent industry in the Upper Peninsula.

Logs were towed on Lake Superior in large groups, called log booms, from where they were cut to nearby sawmills. Several large chutes were constructed along the lakeshore to send logs from land onto the lake. One of the most famous chutes was on the western edge of the Grand Sable Dunes. Legend has it that this chute earned the name, "the Devil's Slide" because logs would catch fire due to the immense friction produced when they were sent down the chute.

Today, no evidence of the chute at the Grand Sable Dunes remains, but interpretive panels along the 1/8-mile trail to the overlook still tell the story behind the name, the "Log Slide".

If there’s one downside to Michigan summers, it’s how quickly they fly by. That said…

August is one of our favorite times to be in Grand Marais. The weather is usually beautiful, the bugs have (mostly) disappeared, and Lake Superior is finally warm enough for a refreshing dip.

The Log Slide Scenic Overlook is one of those places. Just a short walk from the parking lot, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Grand Sable Dunes, Lake Superior, and Au Sable Point. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even make the trek down to the beach—but remember, getting back up is much harder than getting down!
