We are wrapping up one of the most perfect autumn seasons we've ever had, but winter ski season is not too far into the future. We are collecting winter deposits now, which is the time when cabin reservations open up and change. Our dates after Christmas usually book a year ahead of time, but we have a few openings. There are also a number of cabins available before Christmas and even on Christmas, to make a truly special memory.

Bearskin guests: It’s very moosey at the resort tonight. There are two female moose running around on the cabin roads. They’ll settle down for the night, but no doubt there will be moose activity when the sun rises. Keep your camera ready.

We are having a gorgeous MEA/Fall Break holiday here at Bearskin, with a current very pleasant high of 64°. But historically it hasn’t always been perfect — some years we have a surprise October winter. Enjoy some pictures from the past on this date, plus a few from this weekend.

If you leave Bearskin these days without spotting a moose, well, a moose probably spotted you! They are *everywhere* now. Moose photos from David Brickner and Gene Wobser, who both had lots of moose sightings on the west end of the resort the past few days. And Bob was at the campground this morning, checking his book for campground payments, and looked up to see two huge cow moose staring at him from just a few feet away. ‘Tis the season — moose are on the move!

MEA weekend is usually the end of the busy season at Bearskin but, wow, look at this forecast for next week! Pushing 60° and sunny almost every day! You ought to be here with your camera. The moose are eager to pose for you. 😉

MEA weekend is coming up, the wonderful fall family travel holiday that nobody outside of our state understands. 😂. Trust us, every state should have a few days off school in the fall so families can travel to the Gunflint together before winter sets in!

We have activities with Annette planned for Friday and Saturday. North House Folk School has some great family activities planned in Grand Marais, with pretty flexible scheduling so you can squeeze everything in. And don’t forget that our delightful Chik-Wauk Museum is open through Sunday, October 18. We may still have a few free passes at the front desk but if not, the cost is extremely reasonable.

Keep your eyes open for moose and other amazing creatures while you’re here. Ask at the front desk about where the moose are—there are at least two nearby now. Two otters are playing in the cabin bay, there are busy beavers cutting up trees and building a new lodge on the west end of the lake, and there are ponds full of swans if you have the right vehicle for that trip. Should be an awesome MEA! ♥️

It's hard to believe, but ski season is right around the corner! When you ski on the 80+K trails of the Central Gunflint Ski Trail System, you might not realize how much work goes into preparing those trails for skiing. Our latest blog talks about what we've been doing to make sure every trail is ready for you this winter.

Ridge Run Trail on a fall afternoon. This is a gorgeous time to hike our trails, and because we’re preparing for winter ski season — plus we just held the bike race — trails are mowed short, perfect for hiking.

As of October 1 you no longer need a reserved permit for overnight BWCA canoe trips. As long as you’re well-prepared for colder nights and you anticipate the very chilly water, this can still be a beautiful time to leave on a canoe trip. Not ideal for novices, but experienced paddlers still have wonderful trips in early October.
