Every season offers a different set of experiences at Gunflint but there are some things that never change. The peace of mind that the wilderness provides is abundant year round. The Kerfoot family had been here for 3 generations prior. John and Mindy Fredrikson truly enjoy welcoming guests to the Northwoods just as the Kerfoot family had for years. We like to help you explore our forest and find

those places that are special. Our staff is always willing to talk with you about fun places to visit in the forest and lakes around us. So here are some ideas of what we see and do during the four seasons. We invite you to relax in one of our lakeside fireplace cabins, feast in our dining rooms, and play in our outdoors. A vacation to the Gunflint highlands of northern Minnesota is unique. The area is remote and pristine, where we have more wildlife (deer, moose, eagles, beaver, etc.) than people. Our northwoods, just 6 hours north of the Twin Cities, continues to exist in a time of urban sprawl and expanding suburbs. Words alone cannot do it justice and the only way to understand the Gunflint area is by experiencing it first hand. Here at Gunflint, moose encounters and animal sightings are more common than a visit by your neighbors. It would be our pleasure to welcome you and your family to our resort, which we hope will become your new "home in the woods".

Happy Labor Day from Gunflint Lodge!

What a summer it's been. ☀️

Days on the lake. Paddles into the Boundary Waters. Fish stories. Hikes through the woods. Campfires under the stars. Weddings, family vacations, adventures with old friends—and plenty of new ones made along the way.

Thank you to everyone who made Gunflint part of your summer. We loved having you here. ❤️

And while we're not quite ready to say goodbye to summer, we're getting pretty excited about what's coming next... 🍁

Crisp mornings. Quiet lakes. Fall fishing. The first red and gold appearing in the forest. Cozy fires. Darker skies. And one of our very favorite seasons on the Gunflint Trail.

Here's to a wonderful summer—and everything still to come this fall.

🍁 Fall Color Watch from High Cliffs — Week 1

And so it begins...

This was the view from High Cliffs on September 3. At first glance, it still looks very much like summer on the Gunflint Trail.

But look a little closer.

One brilliant red maple has already made its move, and a few touches of yellow are beginning to appear among a whole lot of green.

We're going to come back to this same spot each week and photograph the view as the forest makes its transformation from summer green to the reds, oranges and golds of fall.

Fall colors are stunning on the Gunflint Trail, but when the sun goes down, nature puts on another show.

One of our favorite things about September happens after everyone else has gone to bed.

Far from city lights, the night sky over Gunflint Lake can be spectacular—and you don't have to go far to find a front-row seat.

🌌 The dock — step outside and look across the open lake

🛶 The lakeshore — open horizons and reflections on calm nights

Ask someone who knows the Gunflint Trail well about their favorite time of year, and you might be surprised by the answer.

September and October are pretty hard to beat.

The summer crowds thin out. Mornings turn crisp. The forest begins changing from green to gold and red. The lakes get quieter. Fishing heats up as the water cools. Campfires feel a little cozier. And after sunset, our dark skies take over.
