I have always been transparent on this page, so here goes:

It looks like our 2026 summer season with Jordan Rentals is just about filled up, but do get in touch with them if you wanted to rent in July and August. If some weeks are filled, I'm sure there's a waiting list.

We are also still renting on Airbnb and we've had quite a few visitors so far this fall.

We are, as always, very thankful to everyone who stays at Sunset Haven and cherishes it almost as much as we do.

I will say, however, that we are taking things on a year by year basis with the rent/do not rent decision. We were young (ish) twenty years ago when we bought the cottage and first started renting it. We are now in our 60s with grown kids and small grandchildren and there are aspects of renting that we have less resilience around now.

One way we will handle this in the meantime is to be increasingly selective about choosing renters and also making sure that the effort yields a return that makes it worthwhile and funds some improvements to the cottage. We hope to replace all of the carpet, for example, before the summer '26 season. We have even bigger long term plans, none of which will change the essential character of the camp that everyone seems to love.

So, as long as this restful place is still available for sharing, please treat it with respect and care. Know that it is an increasingly rare thing to find a genuinely old fashioned lake "camp" in Maine, especially in southern Maine, and that these are not to be taken for granted.

For anyone else...

I can't believe I have to say this, but if you use a non-stick pan at Sunset Haven, please also use the plastic spatulas we have for this purpose. Maybe don't use scorching heat. Maybe don't burn stuff onto the bottom of the pan if you can help it at all. But by all means, don't scrub the entire surface off a lot of the pan, leaving jagged little Teflon edges, and then put it back in the cabinet. This pan is going to the dump.

The Good Ship is gonna need your help to sell out!

Just arrived at Sunset Haven to turn it over for some incoming Airbnb guests and am so dismayed by its condition I had to hold back tears.

I don't know when it happened but someone literally drove four nails into the knotty pine to the left of the wall ovens. No one watered the flower boxes during the drought. There's a full garbage can all the way down on the beach where our trash service would never find it but animals surely would. Lots of new carpet stains. All manner of stuff pulled out of drawers and cabinets littering the work room. Tool and parts cabinet drawers open and rifled through. Sliding closet door off track. Outdoor furniture really dirty. Not a single clean surface in the kitchen. I could go on. The whole cottage just a mess.

We have a lot of thinking to do about alternatives to renting. We'll keep everyone posted. We know many of you love this place almost as much as we do, but today...I honestly can't think about renting another summer season.

It's gonna be a long haul to get it ready for Monday's guests. I better get started.

Did you know we have Loon Rangers on Little Sebago Lake? These are dedicated volunteers who, along with our state wildlife biologists, monitor the numbers, health, and safety of our loon population. Please help them by respecting our wild loons, not getting too close to them, keeping boat wake away from shorelines and nesting areas, and not using lead fishing gear. I invite GET OUT 207 to add to this list of best practices!

Also GET OUT 207 is an active Registered Maine Guide service on our lake, so if you are looking for that, get in touch!

In a rare offering, we are opening up Sunset Haven for Airbnb rental in September. We have so much work to do on our house in Paris to prepare it for sale that we might as well offer the cottage for rental that month. Our loss is your gain.
