✨ More than a meal. More than a museum. This is living history. ✨
During segregation, the Green Book helped Black travelers find safe places to eat, rest, and simply exist with dignity. When safe restaurants could not be found, many Black families packed “shoebox lunches” filled with fried chicken, boiled eggs, vegetables, fruit, and pound cake before hitting the road. It was preparation rooted in survival.
The Historic Magnolia House was one of those sacred places listed in the Green Book. A refuge. A gathering place. A home away from home for Black travelers, musicians, athletes, intellectuals, and families navigating a segregated America.
Today, only a small percentage of Green Book sites still remain, and Magnolia stands proudly as one of the few left in North Carolina. That is why our recent recognition and nomination as a nationally recognized Green Book historic site matters so deeply. This story deserves to be protected, honored, and passed on.
Natalie Pass-Miller and the Pass family understand the importance of preserving not just a building, but the truth, the culture, and the legacy held inside these walls. 💚
And while we honor the past, Magnolia is still alive with community today. Join us for Sunday brunch, Wednesday night jazz, educational tours, shoebox lunch experiences, overnight stays, weddings, and cultural events that continue the story forward.
The doors are still open. The history is still speaking. And we invite you to come experience it for yourself.
