AMC Maine Woods Initiative

AMC Maine Woods Initiative Nestled in the 100-Mile Wilderness, our Maine lodges are connected by more than 90 miles of trails.

Wake up to the echoing calls of native loons and take in views of local moose as you paddle across Long Pond. Discover dramatic vistas along miles of interconnected trails, or try your hand at landing the bountiful brook trout in nearby ponds and streams. The lodges and surrounding conservation lands are open to the public as part of AMC's Maine Woods Initiative. For reservations, call 603-466-2727 Monday through Saturday, 9:00am-5:00pm.

Our dear friends at Hedgehog Gatehouse noticed that their hummingbird water seemed to be disappearing at an alarming rate. To get to the bottom of it, they put a trail cam up. And caught...The Sippy Cup Bandits! They were caught in action, and have been sorely disappointed ever since, as the feeder is now being brought indoors overnight. We've got some pretty cute and clever critters roaming AMC's Maine Woods, and we hope you get to come see them yourself! Photo credits to Joel.

Over the summer season campers had many experiences! On this week, campers dove into Moosehead region's history, from 20,000 years ago to today. On Tuesday, they explored museums and learned about Wabanaki peoples' presence in the area. On Wednesday, campers boarded the Katahdin for a 3-hour cruise with guest speakers Jason Pardilla and James Francis for the Thoreau-Wabanaki Festival. Finally, Thursday was hike day. Campers conquered Big Moose Mountain, stopping along the way to appreciate the fire warden's cabin.

Variety is nice. Throughout the Maine Woods there are options to free camp or utilize paid camping sites. Make sure you research ahead the best option for you, plan for the shorter days coming up, follow Leave No Trace ethics, and create some memories! See video credits below.

American Beech is our predominant hard mast (aka-nut producing) tree species. And bears love them! Our Operations Forester, JW, pointed out a very exciting tree on our last field tour. Can you see the bear claw marks scampering up the trunk of this beech tree to get to the nuts?!
