AMC Maine Woods Initiative Nestled in the 100-Mile Wilderness, our Maine lodges are connected by more than 90 miles of trails.

Wake up to the echoing calls of native loons and take in views of local moose as you paddle across Long Pond. Discover dramatic vistas along miles of interconnected trails, or try your hand at landing the bountiful brook trout in nearby ponds and streams. The lodges and surrounding conservation lands are open to the public as part of AMC's Maine Woods Initiative. For reservations, call 603-466-2727 Monday through Saturday, 9:00am-5:00pm.

New to the AMC Maine Chapter? Come get your boots dirty with us. ๐Ÿฅพ

Join us Saturday, June 20, for a first-year member trail work day on the Burnt Meadow Trail in Brownfield, Maine. This beginner-friendly stewardship event is a great way to meet fellow members, learn trail maintenance basics, and give back to the trails youโ€™ll come back to again and again.

No prior experience is needed, and tools and PPE will be provided. Canโ€™t stay for the full day? Thatโ€™s okay, just let the trip leader know when you register.

Spots are still open, and weโ€™d love to see you there!

Wanted: Your banana peels, coffee grounds, and veggie scraps!

This May we installed a three-bin-set of compost containers at Gorman Chairback, Little Lyford, and Medawisla! Made possible through the DEP Waste Diversion Grant, these insulated composters are designed to withstand Maine's harsh winters, turn food scraps into finished compost fast, and keep rodents and other curious critters out. The new system will help divert food waste and cardboard from the landfill while creating nutrient-rich compost that staff and Greenville partners can take to use in their gardens.

From hauling parts to turning wrenches, it was a rewarding week of hands-on sustainability work for AMC Sustainability Director Jen Natyzak and Sustainability Intern Brooke Goldfeder in some of Maine's most beautiful landscapes!

Maine Education and Sedomocha MS students were able to release the Atlantic Salmon fry they have been raising and learning about since February. It was a very successful semester of learning and observing--over 100 of the 200 eggs survived to the fry stage. These young fry will help to repopulate the waters that run through MWI conserved lands and will benefit from the many fish passage projects that have been completed over the years. Conservation is a multi-generational team effort!

Gorman Chairback Solar Upgrades! โ˜€๏ธ

The Gorman Chairback solar project is now fully operational with expanded panel capacity, new batteries, and upgraded inverters, and itโ€™s already delivering amazing results. The system is designed to shift the lodge from daily generator reliance to primarily solar-powered operations, significantly reducing fuel use, operating costs, and emissions while improving reliability and reducing maintenance demands on staff.

๐ŸŸง Fuel + cost savings: Expected to cut diesel use by ~75% (roughly 1,800โ€“2,000 gallons/year baseline), while also avoiding ongoing generator service costs.

๐ŸŒŽ Emissions impact: Contributes meaningfully to AMCโ€™s climate goals, with Maine lodge diesel reductions representing up to 10% of total organizational emissions when fully implemented.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ง Operational benefits: Less generator runtime means longer equipment life, fewer breakdowns, and a more reliable, lower-maintenance system for staff to manage day-to-day.

๐ŸŒฒ This project was made possible because of Jennifer Natyzak and AMCโ€™s Net Zero goals, our partner Assured Solar, and our amazing Development team who were able to secure funding from a generous donor for this important project.

This is a three phase project, with Lyford and Medawisla getting upgrades later in the year.
๐Ÿ™Œ More excitement to come!
