Friends,
It's time we all had a talk.
One week ago today I went into Guernsey and trapped a dog that was desperately in need of rescue. A dog that no one could get near, in a town with no animal control personnel, and no animal sheltering facilities.
This was an animal that we have neither the space nor the resources for currently. Nonetheless, we had received countless voicemails, text messages, Facebook messages, emails, and Facebook tags about this dog, so we came to her rescue.
A few days after we trapped her, I posted a reel with her story and fundraiser so that all of those people who supposedly wanted us to help her, would have the opportunity to pay it forward.
Pictured below are the stats for that fundraising post. In the last 5 days since we posted it, it has been viewed 1,826 times. It has received 67 likes (across all shares) and was shared just 13 times (4 of which were by us). That's right folks. One THOUSAND eight HUNDRED and twenty six people took the time to click on that post and then did NOTHING.
ZERO is the number of dollars donated, supplies sent, or inquiries made about adopting this dog or even just to check in and see how she is doing. People rallied for this dog when it was out on the street and was a concern or nuisance for them, but once she crossed the threshold here at Critters Inc., people stopped caring.
In that same 5 days since that post was made we have received messages and requests to come help the following animals: a momma cat with 2 kittens living at the gas station in Wheatland- all sick, a pitbull living in a car at the motel in Wheatland (requested by private individuals as well as the Wheatland Police Dept), a litter of 6-7 orange kittens living at a shanty property in Guernsey, an owned border collie puppy, a litter of breeder kittens that could not be sold from Glendo, an adult cat in Wheatland whose owner passed away, an entire colony of cats and kittens from the west side of Torrington, an underweight stray dog found east of Wheatland, and a message about the general stray cat population in Guernsey.
ALL IN JUST 5 DAYS.
Yes, our services extend to people all over but our home is Platte County and that is where the largest majority of our services are received. We have a very active TNR and spay/neuter program, a pet food pantry, and our rescue program that regularly takes in strays in need. Yet, we have only about a dozen donors across all of Platte County.
Did you know that more than 90% of the donations that we receive in a calendar year comes from outside the county and outside the state???? That's right! We help the people and animals of Platte County and yet the funding and supplies that keep us afloat comes from people who aren't even benefiting from our services or living in this area. I truly think that should be an embarassment to the people proud to call this place home.
The whole of Platte County wants Critters Inc. to solve the insurmountable magnitude of animal issues we have here in our county and yet the majority of the people here don't want to do anything in return. So let's talk about what people CAN do.
Because we are the only resource here, everything falls on our shoulders, just as it does in our surrounding counties. There is only one shelter in Goshen County and one shelter in Converse county. Our area is an absolute mess.
Yes, there is some complexity to this. For one, people need to vote to change laws for animals, and two, people need to research their elected officials in order to ensure that those laws and ordinances in favor of animals become available to vote on in the first place. Are you mad about the state of affairs here in our county? I know I sure am. We can talk about breeders and we can talk about politics, and we can talk about irresponsible pet owners but I am going to save those topics for another post.
If our area wants sports and after school extracurricular activities for kids, they donate and get involved to ensure those programs stay afloat. This is no different. If you want Critters Inc. to exist here, then you have to offer support. There is not one single person reading this who can't afford to hit the share button every time they see one of our posts, drop off a roll of paper towels or a can of cat food a few times a year, or take the $5 that they are going to go spend on an energy drink, a pack of ci******es, or a drink at the bar and donate it to us instead. New names and faces on our donors and supporters list would be a refreshing sight.
Imagine this. 8,645 is the number of people currently living in Platte County. If each person donated just $10 today, it would fund us for the next 2 years. Let that sink in.
