What we do matters! We love our beach days, but so do turtles and other marine animals. Here are some tips to keep our beaches clean and safe so EVERYONE can enjoy the beach!

🐢 Give turtles plenty of space if you encounter one. If you see a nesting turtle or hatching turtle nest, do not disturb them and call your local wildlife rescue or conservation group, especially if you see signs of distress. If you see a hatchling struggling to get to the water, do not pick it up, as it needs to imprint on the sand to remember the beach as a nesting adult!

🗑️ Pick up and properly dispose of all trash to keep it from getting on the beach or in the water. Sea turtles are some of the most likely marine species to ingest plastic, which could injure and/or kill them.

🏖️ When you’re ready to leave the beach, make sure to take all chairs and umbrellas, fill in any holes, and knock down sand castles. Hatchlings and nesting turtles can run into these obstacles or fall into holes, which can cause injury or spook nesting turtles and prevent them from laying their eggs.

☀️ Make sure to leave the beach by sundown, as this is when turtles will most likely come up to nest and need a peaceful environment to lay their eggs and not get spooked, which can result in them fleeing and laying their eggs in the water.

💡 If you live near or on the beach, remember to turn off lights so that turtles do not confuse them with the moon, which they use to guide themselves to the sea. Leaving lights on can result in turtles going the wrong way and ending up on the road.
