This little mushroom we found on campus is so cute, it looks like it’s not even real!
This is a Bitter Bolete, which is often confused with the King Bolete. One big difference, though: the King Bolete is edible, while the Bitter Bolete is not edible and is extremely bitter.

That intense bitterness is thought to serve as a defense mechanism, helping keep animals and insects from eating it.

After all this rain, the ground will be nice and moist, so keep an eye out! We’ll be seeing a lot more mushrooms popping up! 🍄

If you didn’t already know, the Learning Campus has a couple of animal ambassadors! One of the ways we care for them is by providing enrichment in their daily lives. We do this in a variety of ways, including taking them to different areas of campus to explore.

Recently we took our Yellow-Bellied Slider to enjoy a nice fall stroll through our pumpkin patch. The only thing she’s missing is a nice pumpkin spice latte… although I have a feeling she’d much prefer a freshly cut or a worm filled pumpkin!

And maybe we’re a little biased, but I think the pumpkin leaves really bring out the green in her eyes!

In case you missed it on our stories last week, we had a very cool find in our pollinator garden during our Creepy Crawlers program!

After learning about all kinds of cool creepy crawlers, participants headed outside to explore our garden and flower beds in search of insects. And look what they found, one of the critters they had just learned about! This very hungry Carolina Mantis was enjoying a freshly caught Long-tailed Skipper butterfly.

Fun fact: Did you know that praying mantises have binocular vision? Their two eyes provide overlapping views, allowing them to perceive depth in a way that is somewhat similar to humans. This incredible 3D vision helps them accurately judge the distance to their prey before striking!

Getting into the holiday spirit, this month's Homeschool Day was all about strange plants!
We had so much fun last week guiding students through the plant world. We covered how to identify carnivorous plants, plant anatomy and seed dispersal.

Loving the Homeschool classes offered, but haven't been able to grab a spot? We offer private classes to homeschool groups too! Visit learningcampusgsp.com/programs to start planning a trip for your co-op or friend group!

Have you ever seen a turtle pose? Now you have!

This adorable little thing is a Florida Softshell Turtle, and they can be seen around the park in both our brackish and freshwater habitats. They are easy to spot because they lack the round, scute-covered shell that most of our aquatic turtles have. Instead, their shell has less bone and is covered in flexible, leathery skin.

Their flat, pliable shell may not provide as much protection, but it does allow them to swim faster, helping them evade predators. They can also camouflage themselves quite well along the bottom while keeping their long neck and snorkel-like nose above the water to breathe.
