While it may not be the postcard beach photo everyone hopes for, this seaweed is actually an important part of the Gulf ecosystem.
Before washing ashore, floating sargassum provides shelter and food for young fish, crabs, shrimp, and even sea turtles. Think of it as a floating nursery drifting through the Gulf.
What you’re seeing on the beach is the final chapter of a journey that may have started hundreds of miles away, carried by ocean currents and winds before reaching our shoreline.
The amount of sargassum can change quickly depending on weather, tides, and currents, so today’s beach conditions may look completely different next week.
Have you ever seen this much sargassum on our beaches before?
