If you grew up coming to Gulf Shores in October, you probably already know what happens when Shrimp Festival weekend arrives.

Gulf Shores gets PACKED.

The National Shrimp Festival has grown into one of Alabama's signature coastal traditions, taking over the area around Gulf Shores Public Beach with seafood, music, arts and crafts and enormous crowds.

And 2026 is no exception.

This year's festival is scheduled for October 8 through October 11 at Gulf Shores Public Beach. The official tourism event calendar estimates attendance at approximately 250,000.

Think about that number.

A quarter-million people.

For a shrimp festival.

But longtime visitors know this isn't simply about eating shrimp.

It's walking around in October when the brutal summer heat has finally started backing off.

It's live music coming from the stages.

Artists and vendors lining the festival grounds.

The smell of seafood everywhere.

And somebody in your family insisting they know a secret parking spot that turns out to be approximately three miles away.

The festival also represents how much Gulf Shores itself has changed.

What began as a coastal community celebration became an event capable of drawing enormous crowds to Alabama's beaches.

Yet the basic idea remains wonderfully Gulf Coast.

Get everybody together.

Cook seafood.

Play music.

And hope somebody remembered where the car is parked.

You really should try this restaurant ❤️One of my absolute favorites and I hope to visit next week!

You really should try this restaurant ❤️
One of my absolute favorites and I hope to visit next week!

Crafted by our wonderful bartender, Benjamin, the Rhinestone Cowgirl is an ode to the sparkle, spirit, and unapologetic glamour of Dolly Parton. Composed with Nolet’s Gin, fresh lemon, house-made vanilla syrup, grenadine, and grapefruit come together in a cocktail that is bright, silky, and just a little bit playful. Finished with a sugared rim and a touch of rhinestone shine. A little sweet. A little tart. A whole lot of country glamour ✨

I love Lulu’s
Great food, entertainment and gift shop

Some restaurants move locations.

LuLu’s took that idea a little more literally.

Before LuLu's Gulf Shores became the huge Gulf Shores destination people know today, Lucy Buffett operated LuLu’s Sunset Grill on Weeks Bay near Fairhope.

Lucy, the sister of Jimmy Buffett, had returned to Alabama and opened what she describes as a little combination bait shop, burger joint and bar.

It became a local gathering place.

Then, after about five years, the lease wasn't renewed.

So what did she do?

She loaded what could be moved onto a roughly 150-foot barge and relocated the operation to Gulf Shores.

Today LuLu’s sits at Homeport Marina on the Intracoastal Waterway at 200 East 25th Avenue.

And yes, the Intracoastal is important. LuLu’s is not on Weeks Bay today.

The Gulf Shores location has grown far beyond a little waterfront restaurant. It combines food, live entertainment and family activities in a sprawling waterfront setting where boats can pull up nearby.

But underneath all of that is one of my favorite Alabama restaurant origin stories.

A woman loses the lease on her little waterfront restaurant.

Instead of giving up, she puts the operation on a barge.

Then she floats it toward its next chapter.

That's about as Gulf Coast as a restaurant story gets.

Great food and atmosphere 😎🏖️

Great food and atmosphere 😎🏖️

Everybody knows the Gulf-facing side of Orange Beach.

But turn toward Canal Road and you discover another waterfront entirely.

Wolf Bay.

That's where you'll find GTs On The Bay.

The restaurant sits directly overlooking Wolf Bay and combines indoor dining with a large outdoor deck and waterfront atmosphere.

The menu goes well beyond the standard basket of fried shrimp.

There are seafood dishes, steaks, fish tacos, Cajun empanadas, stone-hearth pizza and even a fresh-made salad bar. The restaurant also offers a cook-your-catch option.

But I'd argue the view is half the reason to go.

Wolf Bay represents an older side of Orange Beach.

Long before this became a major resort city, waterways like these supported fishermen and families whose lives revolved around boats.

Today you can sit outside, eat dinner and watch that same water.

GTs also hosts live music seasonally from March through October.

And that's the beauty of Canal Road.

You're only minutes from the packed beach highway, yet the atmosphere can feel completely different.

Orange Beach isn't surrounded by just one body of water.

Sometimes the best sunset isn't happening over the Gulf at all.
