Protecting Your Pipes and Plumbing
Insulate Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in attics, crawl spaces, and garages with insulation, foam, or towels.
Disconnect Hoses: Remove all garden hoses from outdoor faucets to prevent water trapped inside from freezing and bursting the pipe.
Cover Faucets: Use insulated covers or Styrofoam covers on all exterior spigots.
Drip Faucets: Allow indoor faucets to drip slowly—both cold and hot—especially those located on exterior walls.
Open Cabinet Doors: Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow household heat to circulate around pipes.
Know Your Shutoff: Locate your main water shutoff valve in case of a burst pipe.
Turn Off Irrigation: Shut down and drain automatic sprinkler systems.
