Yesterday I was running up to Ticonderoga, but decided to take my drone with me because the fog on the lake was incredible, but the gem of the morning was finally taking a shot that Ive wanted to take for a while.

The John Jay was launched in the spring of 1850. She was a sidewheel steamship that was 145 feet long and 20 feet wide.
Her wooden hull was made completely out of oak. She had a 75 horsepower wood-fired steam engine which moved the boat at a steady 13 mph.
She made daily trips from Caldwell (Lake George Village) to Cook's Landing in Ticonderoga where she was met by stage coaches which would then take passengers to and from a landing on Lake Champlain.

On July 29th, 1856 the John Jay left Cook's Landing much later than normal (at 6pm). A short ways through the trip back a fire was discovered onboard. During this time a strong storm came up with some very strong winds, this stopped the draft in the smokestack and built up pressure in the furnace for the boiler. Once the pressure became too great the doors burst open, flames fanning everywhere and severing the steering mechanism.
The Captain (E.S. Harris) braved the flames to reach the emergency steering system in the stern of the ship. He was blinded by smoke, so he could only guess to where to turn the ship to beach her safely. The John Jay hit this large exposed rock (the rock point in the photo) which bounced the boat out into the lake.
As the fire spread the passengers began to jump off the ship, those who did were pushed further out into the lake by the current coming from the still turning paddle-wheels. Those who jumped towards shore were safe, unfortunately of those who jumped over the other side 5 women and 1 man drown. Why more women than men? Because of the dresses that they wore back then. Lots of constricting cloth that weighed them down in the water.

The wreck was dragged up the sandy slope and had her engines salvaged and the rest of the ship was left here to rot, that is why the keel lays where it is today.
