This piece is part of a new body of work by Parker, paper sewn florals. I love the sense of anticipation here, like we’re turning the page of a romance novel.

Available through M Stark Gallery: “Sardi,” 2019, mixed media print, edition of 10, 29 x 24 inches, $1,200 framed, $900 unframed. This work will be on view in Margaret Niven’s solo collection, “Protected Landscapes,” opening September 12 at M Stark Gallery in Half Moon Bay. Preview the full collection via link in bio.

“Sardines” is a broad term used for several small pelagic fish worldwide. “Sardi” by Margaret Niven celebrates the bounty and beauty of our rich and pristine coastal waters. This photopolymer etching is printed on a nautical chart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary which stretches 276 miles from the Marin Headlands to Cambria and 30 miles out to sea. As a coastal resident and open-water rower, Margaret Niven feels a deep connection to the sanctuary. Sardines swim in large schools which Niven can see at the water’s surface from her rowing shell. They flash reflections in a great ball of shimmering silver light. Along the California coast, sardines generally move south in late fall and winter.

“Linda Pouliot’s contributions [to the summer collection “Farms, Fish, Flowers”]are interiorscapes, scenes from the kitchen or dining room. Intimate spaces painted in flat planes and vibrant colors that she likes. A door leading to ‘Repetto’s Nursery,’ ‘Classic Kettle’ on a kitchen stove, and a checkered table cloth scene with fish and flowers, ‘Dinner Table,’ are all painted in Flashe, a signage medium. There’s a touch of Matisse and Bonnard here.” -Bart A. Charlow, Bart on Art, San Mateo Daily Journal, published 7/18/26.
