I was talking to a friend this morning about something I’ve been seeing more and more of lately, and I think it’s worth sharing.

This time of year, a lot of young adults are starting to look for jobs, which is a great thing. Work ethic, responsibility, and communication are all skills that will serve them for life.

But I want to be very clear about something from an employer’s perspective:

If a parent is reaching out to me on behalf of their son or daughter about a job, that’s already a red flag.

Not because I don’t believe you when you say your kid is hardworking, respectful, or capable. I’m sure they are. But the first step in getting a job is showing initiative and that has to come directly from them.

We live in a time where communication has never been easier. Text, email, social media, websites there are countless ways to reach out. If someone wants an opportunity, they should be the one taking that step.

When I see a young person reach out themselves introduce who they are, express interest, ask questions that tells me everything I need to know about their mindset. That’s someone I want to talk to.

Parents, your role is incredibly important but it’s not to make the first contact. It’s to encourage, guide, and support from the sidelines. Help them get there. Help them prepare. But let them step up.

Because at the end of the day, they’re not getting a job for you they’re building something for themselves.

And that starts with showing up.
