Have you ever wondered what a bee does all day? Turns out they are doing a lot more than hopping from flower to flower.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently studied bumble bees at Illiniwek by fitting them with tiny transmitters and tracking their movements through the prairie and surrounding areas.

The results show just how important restored prairie can be for pollinators. One bee crossed the Mississippi River 30 times over four days, likely stopping at Illiniwek to forage before heading back to its nest across the river. Pretty cool, right?

There’s extra buzz around the blooms today!

In honor of National Honey Bee Day, we’re giving a little love to the pollinators that help keep Illiniwek growing. This busy visitor was spotted on common milkweed in our prairie area, a sweet reminder that wildflowers do more than look pretty.

Illiniwek’s wooded bike trails bring the good stuff: ramps, log rollovers, wooden berms and a scenic climb worth the effort.

Or keep it relaxed on the Great River Trail, where the Mississippi views do most of the work.

However you ride, remember to stay on the trail, stay aware and enjoy the view.

A little bee, a little milkweed and a big reminder of why conservation matters.

Bees, butterflies and other pollinators depend on native plants for food, and in return, they help support the wildflowers, plants and habitats that so many species rely on.

Celebrate National Conservation Day by doing one small thing for nature: pick up litter, plant native flowers or simply slow down and notice what’s buzzing nearby.
