Today marks the 8th anniversary of the Hamtramck Hostel. I am starting to sound like a broken record as there is only so many things you can say each year. When I first bought the place, we had two long term guests. One guest from Poland who had stayed in room 8 for over 55 years and another for 22 years. We did the math, and it meant that the guest who stayed for 55 years was roughly the same age when he moved in that I was (early 30s) when I first took over the hostel. It has since been my goal to be able to last at least that long running this place.

It has not always been easy. The hostel never closes 24/7/365. It doesn't make a ton of money either, especially for the amount of work and costs it takes to run, but it does make a difference and provide a low cost, affordable option to people that might not exist without it.

Recently I was asked if I would still run the hostel again, knowing what i know now about the business. I think the answer is an unequivocal yes.

Today as you probably know, the hostel is run almost entirely by a team of work-for-stay volunteers. Without them, the hostel would have to close.

This weekend (Saturday October 11th starting 7PM) we will celebrate the 8th anniversary of the hostel. There will be pizza and beer and all past and present volunteers, neighbors and friends of the hostel are welcome to attend!
