After a long day on the trail, there’s something relaxing about looking out over the canal and knowing tomorrow’s ride starts just steps away. Just a comfortable place to rest between miles.

For cyclists traveling the C&O Canal Towpath or connecting to the GAP Trail, it’s hard to beat staying right where the adventure is happening.

A quiet reminder that some of the best moments at 1878 RiverRun aren’t planned.

This morning, a graceful heron stopped by the canal, taking its time along the water’s edge while the world moved a little slower around it. Moments like these are part of what makes staying here special.

Sometimes the best part of the journey is slowing down long enough to notice.

Host Note #7 – When the Season Wakes Up

There is a certain feeling that has started to become familiar.

At first, the house is quiet. A reservation comes in here and there. A few messages. A few cyclists passing through town.

Then slowly, something shifts.

The calls start coming more often.

"Do you have availability?"

"We are riding the trail next week."

"We heard about your place."

Calendars start filling in. Breakfast supplies get restocked more often. Laundry piles grow. Conversations become schedules and schedules become plans.

And suddenly the quiet winter rhythm turns into something exciting.

Busy season is not one big moment. It sneaks in little by little until one day you realize the house is alive again.

People arrive from different places with different stories and different reasons for traveling. Some are here for adventure. Some are here for rest. Some are just passing through.

But every person who walks through the door becomes part of the story this house is telling. Little by little, the season wakes up, the house comes alive, and we get the privilege of being a small part of each journey.

Sometimes I like to sit in the parking lot at 1878 RiverRun and just watch the birds come and go.
No rushing. No noise. Just quiet little moments that remind me to slow down and appreciate the simple things. 🐦🌿

Happy Birthday to my husband! 🎉

Today is a special day at 1878 RiverRun because we’re celebrating the man behind so much of what keeps this place running day after day. From projects behind the scenes to all the little things no one ever sees, his hard work and dedication mean so much to our family and this home.

Wishing you a birthday filled with happiness, laughter, and hopefully a little time to relax today. We appreciate you more than you know.
