Get lost on another planet this spring! The Bentonite Hills are a stunning, otherworldly landscape located just outside Hanksville, Utah. Situated on BLM land, these colorful, banded hills are composed of shale formed during the Jurassic period. Mud, silt, fine sand, and volcanic ash were deposited in swamps and lakes, creating the unique geological features we see today. The Bentonite clay absorbs water and becomes extremely slippery and gummy, making vehicle or foot travel challenging or even impossible. This unique characteristic has led to the absence of trails within the Bentonite Hills, as the surface is easily damaged. Footprints and tire tracks leave scars that take many years to heal. To preserve the natural beauty of the area, it’s crucial to follow certain guidelines. Please drive only on designated roads and limit foot travel to firm, previously disturbed areas and wash bottoms. Additionally, remember to leave no trace of your visit to ensure the preservation of this otherworldly landscape for future generations.
