On April 4, 1977, the Montana State Legislature appropriated funds to acquire the Charles M. Russell oil painting “When the Land Belonged to God,” which Russell dubbed his masterpiece. The painting depicts a herd of bison led by a large bull pouring over an open Montana landscape featuring such familiar landmarks as the Big Bend of the Missouri River, Square Butte, Haystack Butte, and the Highwood Mountains.
"When the Land Belonged to God" was commissioned in 1914 by Helena's famed Montana Club, a private gentleman's association that for many decades played a key role in both the social and political life of the Treasure State. When, in the mid-1970s, financial difficulties forced the club to sell the painting, the Historical Society began negotiations for its purchase.
