Some towns still feel like they were shaped by the work they once did and not by whatever trend is passing through this week. Hardwick has that feel. You can sense the old farm country backbone in the way it sits in the hills, with a downtown that never got too polished to lose its character.

The streets carry that lived-in look you only get after years of winters, store closings, reopenings, and people making do. It feels like a place where the morning starts early, the coffee is strong, and somebody is already thinking about the weather.

I always like towns that don’t try too hard. They just keep going, and let the rest of us catch up.
