Sometimes it’s hard to tell if Larry is telling stories or tall tales. 😂

Today’s story: In 1994, during a snowstorm, a tree fell on the Beech Cabin and knocked it off its foundation. According to Larry, they simply “scooted it back over” and reattached it… and apparently did an even better job the second time around.

Nearly 40 years of building and maintaining Mountain Laurel Lake has given Larry a LOT of stories to tell. We’re just glad we’re finally getting some of them on video.

And honestly… after seeing everything he’s built with his own two hands, we might just believe him. 😉

Sometimes all you need is to sit next to the wildflower garden and listen to what the butterflies and bees have to tell you?

Nan's wildflower garden is still looking beautiful! I wonder how much longer the blooms will last?

Going to enjoy them every moment while they last.

We want to wish Patti and Larry a very happy 64th Anniversary today!! We love you!!

Some people see kitchen cabinets.

I see my Pappy's hands.

The cabinets in the Beech Cabin were built by Larry nearly 40 years ago, and today I got to walk through the cabin while he told me the story behind them and how the cabin was built.

I've realized these stories won't be told forever.
So I'm trying to spend a little more time listening... asking questions... and recording the memories before they're gone.

One day, these cabins won't just be places to stay.
They'll be reminders of a man who built something with his own two hands and poured his heart into every detail.

A legacy isn't just what someone leaves behind. It's the stories they leave with us.

I get to share his stories with all of you. ❤️

People often ask what my favorite part of Mountain Laurel Lake is.

It's not the cabins. It's not the lake.

It's sitting beside Pappy, listening to the stories behind everything he built with Nan.

He recently told me how the covered bridge was made from reclaimed lumber from an old barn that was on the back of the property when they bought it and a school demolition. Long before "recycling" became popular, Pappy was giving old materials a second life.

It's easy to look at a place like this and forget that someone just like you built it.
️Not a corporation.
Not a developer.
Just a family with a dream and a whole lot of determination. And that's something worth protecting.

🌼 Nan loves to step outside each evening to see who's visiting her wildflower garden.

On any given night, you'll find bumblebees buzzing from bloom to bloom, butterflies dancing through the flowers, and if you're lucky, a hummingbird or two stopping by for dinner.

She planted this garden for the pollinators and it's safe to say they love it and are telling all their friends to come say hi to Nan 🐝🦋

The wildflower garden is planted in an area that used to be Nan's garden. This garden has been loved and tended by Nan and her daughter Susan for years. Over the decades, it has provided our family with corn, green beans, snow peas, cabbage, squash, tomatoes, strawberries, asparagus, zucchini and so much more.

Gardening became one of Nan's favorite hobbies when she and Larry moved to the farm with their 3 children in the early 1980s. Nan learned a lot from the neighbors they had back then, especially Roy.

Nan has passed on her experience and love for gardening to her daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughters much like Roy so willingly passed on his knowledge to Nan. The knowledge Nan has gained from years of successes and failures is invaluable.

She may not know everything about gardening everywhere, but she sure does know how to do it right here in Kentucky 🌻🌸🌹🌼🌷

I went to tell Pappy dinner was ready and of course he had to show me what he's been working on.

This time it's a hand crafted horse head silhouette cutting board. Every piece is made by hand, one at a time, all by Pappy-O.

He just finished putting the first coat of mineral oil on to let it soak in, so it's not quite done yet. It takes him a little longer than it used to to finish projects, but to be fair, he is 86 years old now.
