Some helpful parking information. We are located .8 of a mile from lower town very much walkable but hilly yes. Free parking at our place when you stay with us at The Light Horse Inn. Get out and explore! #VisitHarpersFerry

Are you looking for your moment of Zen at Harpers Ferry NHP? As our Scout friends would say, it’s always best to “be prepared” for your visit:

• Where to park? There is hassle-free parking located just inside the main entrance of the park (171 Shoreline Drive, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425) adjacent to the Visitor Center and shuttle bus stop. This is the most convenient place to park if you wish to access Lower Town and its trailheads. You can ride the park shuttle bus to Lower Town, which is included in your park entrance fee. Parking in Lower Town is extremely limited.

•Is there a park entrance fee? Yes, there is a park entrance fee, which includes parking, use of the park shuttle buses, admission to the park museums and exhibits, and use of park trails. You can pay at the entrance station, or purchase a park pass online ahead of time: https://www.recreation.gov/sitepass/2747.
-Vehicle - $20.00 (single, private)
-Motorcycle - $15.00
-Per Person - $10.00 (arriving on foot or bicycle)

We hope this information helps you to maintain your peace and tranquility during your visit to Harpers Ferry NHP! For more information to help you plan your visit, check out https://www.nps.gov/hafe/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm.

Trains still cross the Potomac to this day!

Trains still cross the Potomac to this day!

For those of you who have visited Harpers Ferry, how many of you have witness a train rumble across the Potomac? How many of you have heard the horn echo off the mountains? It is something truly special. If you haven’t visited us before, we hope you get the opportunity to do so and experience this audio-visual magic.

While modern diesel-electric locomotives use air horns that are on or off, the same was not true of the steam locomotives that ran along the Baltimore & Ohio and Wi******er & Potomac Railroads. They used whistles that sounded when the engineer pulled on a cord or lever in the locomotive cabin. He could adjust how much steam went into the whistle to change the volume and even the notes coming out of the whistle. Many railroad whistles had more than one chamber, each of a different length, so that a musical chord was played when the whistle sounded. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad utilized several kinds of whistles: a single note (or “chime”) whistle (sometimes called a “hooter”); a three chime whistle; and a six chime whistle. Some were higher pitched, others much deeper. What a wondrous experience it must have been to have heard such music in the water gap!

Some engineers enjoyed putting on a show, especially if they knew they had an audience. Those of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad actually caused some issues with their musical note playing; the whistles were supposed to be for official signaling!

The May 4, 1899 edition of the Shepherdstown Register, a local newspaper, gives us the story:

“The whistle on an engine has been the means used by many an engineer in [expressing] love. Ever since the whistle was placed on a railroad engine, the man at the [throttle] has used it to greet his wife or sweetheart as he sped by her house on his engine, provided she lived near the railroad, and with delight as the loved one hastened to the door to wave a fond salute to the pride of her heart. Every whistle differs from others in tone more or less and every engineer uses the whistle differently from every other man on the road. It is but a matter of a short time until every engineer on a railroad is known by the manner of the t***s of his engine whistle. Every engineer has a signal he uses to attract the attention attract the attention of his wife or sweetheart, and oft-times he uses it unconsciously and much to the detriment of good railroading. Superintendent R. M. Sheets, of the B. & O. Railroad, has determined to stop this sort of whistle flirting and has just issued an order forbidding this 'whip-poor-will' whistling, and has ordered all conductors to report the engineers who do it, and they will be summarily dealt with. The engineers will be compelled to salute their loved ones in some other way.” ~ GEB

Absolutely beautiful... if you’re able to hike this beautiful trail while visiting please do. It’s most definitely worth it. Maryland Heights Overlook pic taken by robgrobphotography.com Thanks for capturing our beautiful town at dawn.

Up before dawn to hike the steep slope to the top of Maryland Heights to get some shots of the fall colors around the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers and Harper’s Ferry, WV. All the while thinking, “Man, when I get to the top, I hope it is worth it.” Then when you reach the top a little rain moves in and the scene unfolds. Could not have asked for more. So, yeah, it was worth it. #marylandheights #harpersferrywv #lost_world_treasures #landscapephotography #beautifulworld

My daughter and I spent the weekend at the Light Horse Inn a couple weeks ago. The Inn is beautiful, the breakfast was delicious and the inn keepers were very friendly. We experienced what we think may have been some paranormal activity during our stay. We are wondering if anyone else who has stayed here experienced anything.
