Pennsylvania’s state insect is the lightning bug, and honestly, that feels exactly right. Not some fancy bug with a dramatic name, but the little glowing backyard legend that made every summer night feel like magic. Long before phones lit up our faces, lightning bugs were lighting up fields, lawns, campgrounds, and quiet back roads all across PA. They’re part of that warm-weather memory almost every Pennsylvanian has: bare feet in the grass, a mason jar with holes in the lid, and that one kid yelling, “I got one!” like they just discovered buried treasure. For a state that loves simple things with a lot of heart, the lightning bug is a perfect fit.
