Dare County is coordinating with NCDOT, which is planning for possible activation of the emergency ferry route between Stumpy Point and Rodanthe. Departure schedules will be announced if the route is activated.

Coastal flooding and ocean overwash will continue through Thursday, Oct. 22. High tides around 4:30 p.m. today and 5 a.m. Thursday could bring additional flooding, erosion and overwash.

⚠️Do not travel on the closed section of N.C. 12 or drive around barricades.
⚠️Stay out of the ocean and away from areas affected by overwash.
⚠️Prepare for the possibility that roadway access will remain unavailable for multiple days.

Dare County’s state of emergency and mandatory visitor evacuation order remain in effect. Visitors are not permitted to enter Hatteras Island. The evacuation order applies to visitors only, not Hatteras Island residents or areas north of Oregon Inlet.

The mandatory evacuation for all Hatteras Island visitors remains in effect as ocean overwash has closed N.C. Highway 12 between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe. Visitor entry will resume only after N.C. Highway 12 is no longer threatened by ocean overwash. Dare County will announce when restrictions are lifted.

Clear skies do not mean the threat has passed. The offshore nor’easter continues to produce dangerous coastal conditions, with additional flooding and overwash expected during high tides through Thursday, October 22.

NCDOT crews are working to rebuild protective dunes and restore the roadway, but continued high tides could delay reopening efforts.

Important Reminders:
✔️ Visitors may not enter Hatteras Island until restrictions are lifted.
✔️ Never drive around barricades or attempt to travel through the highway closure.
✔️ Trash collection on Hatteras Island is suspended until N.C. Highway 12 is safe for travel.

Stay informed at DareNC.gov/Storm and check DriveNC.gov for roadway updates.
