One of the most distinctive features of colonial New England houses are the large central chimneys. These typically measured about 10 feet on each side at the base, and they had fireplace openings for most of the rooms in the house. However, because they are typically hidden within the walls of houses, it can be difficult to appreciate just how large and complex these chimneys were.

This site in Lincoln, Massachusetts provides a rare opportunity to see an exposed central chimney. The house was built around 1695, and it stood on the “Battle Road,” where Redcoats and colonial militiamen skirmished on April 19, 1775, on the first day of the American Revolution. During the 20th century, the house became a restaurant, but it was ultimately destroyed by a fire in 1968, leaving only the chimney still standing.

The property is now owned by the National Park Service as part of the Minute Man National Historical Park, and the chimney has been preserved here. It is now protected by a reconstructed frame, which reflects the original form of the house.

SAVE THE DATE!***

We are excited to confirm that the planning is underway for the 2nd Annual History Day, an event dedicated to celebrating our founding in 1763, and the people, traditions, and milestones that have shaped our town.

Next year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, and we hope you will join HLA, HHI, HHS, and the First Congregational Church of Haverhill to make this 2nd year even more exciting and educational than the inaugural.

We plan to include history talks on the following:
The underground railroad and its connection to our small town - featuring The Bliss Tavern
The arrival of the railroad in our small town
The Revere Bell at the First Congregational Church
Stagecoaches and the route through Haverhill
Other highlights will include an Abbot-Downing Stagecoach on display and its route through Haverhill based on an 1833 route map.

As well, residents dressed in period costumes (all are welcome to participate), horse and wagon rides, historic home tours, traditional crafts, music, and exhibits at the historic Alumni Hall, Wentworth Brown House, the First Congregational Church of Haverhill, and Haverhill Academy.

It is the one time each year when our entire community can come together to bring the past to life in a way that is both educational and genuinely heartwarming.

We will be working over the next several months to obtain additional long-timer interviews and solicit participation from the local schools and libraries and demonstrators (like weavers, broom makers, etc.).

How you can help:

1) Seeking any additional Stagecoach information that you may have or know about
2) Seeking demonstrators for weaving, broom making, rug hooking, clothing, etc.
3) Seeking period costume wearers
4) Seeking participation from the local schools and libraries
5) Spread the word about the date and needs

And of course, volunteers will be appreciated the day of for anyone interested in getting involved. Please feel free to contact the library at 603-989-5578; [email protected] if you would like additional details.

As always, thank you all for everything you do for our beautiful and historic community. You are what makes this such a special place to live!
