Master Conservation Program Week Two: Prairie

The prairie (and the sky) did not disappoint for our lesson at Dordt's prairie. Professor Dr. Robert De Haan provided wonderful insight into all the planning and management that goes into creating and maintaining a beautiful prairie.

What is next? Bus tour with the Natural Resource Conservation Service- stay tuned!

When two separate requests came in this September, the Sioux County Conservation Board (SCCB) saw a perfect opportunity to connect the community. It all started when Boy Scout Troop 211 of Sioux Center reached out to our Environmental Education Team looking for a three-hour conservation volunteer project. At the same time, SCCB naturalists were planning their annual outdoor programming with Sherri Bootsma from the Unity Christian High School Ag Department in Orange City. This year, the high schoolers wanted to try a brand-new activity: orienteering. However, we hit a snag—Oak Grove didn't have an orienteering trail. By bringing these two groups together, we solved the problem beautifully. The Boy Scouts planted the seeds of service, and the students gained a brand-new forest experience.[Photo 1 & 2]: A look at the evening orienteering training session.[Photo 3]: Troop 211 scouts alongside leader Trent Jongetjes after successfully completing the trail on Saturday. (A special thanks to Ben Langstraat, who also co-led this troop project!)[Photos 4–6]: The Unity Christian Ag class putting the temporary trail to good use in the forest.Thank you to everyone who made this wonderful partnership happen!

Our guest speaker Christina will be here this weekend!

Christina Roelofs of Shelby County and IADNR will bring Callie, who is a non-releasable adult female bald eagle. Christina has been a Naturalist with the Shelby County Conservation Board for 24 years, shared position with the Iowa DNR for the past 10 years. She began working with raptors about 21 years ago, and with eagles in 2008. “I love using these birds to educate people about raptors”, Roelofs says.

Program is free thanks to the sponsorship by the Sioux County Conservation Foundation. Online pre-registration appreciated but not mandatory.
