From Cabin 1, it takes about 10 seconds to walk to the lake. But it takes a whopping 120 seconds to walk to Powell’s. Be sure to wear comfortable flip flops and carry sunscreen for your journey. Safety first.

We fished the first tournament of the NWBC series on Spooner lake today. Me and my brother won with just over 20 pounds for 5 fish. We also had the big bass of the day at 4.6 pounds.

With a front moving in we knew we needed to find where they were schooled up and chewing early in the day. We started off throwing reaction baits and catching a few fish. But we felt like we were missing out on some action. After adjusting our boat positioning to make accurate casts in the wind I started dragging a creature bait slowly across the bottom. After a few casts I had caught 2 bigger fish then what we caught throwing reaction baits. So bro switched up to copy what I was doing and we just had a ball. Bass after bass after bass we wore them out and they wore us out. I estimate we caught over 70 largemouth and many around the 3 pound size class.

The bite held steady throughout the day but the major bite windows was early in the morning and around 2:30 in the afternoon.

And so it begins! When you book Cabin 1 at Grand Pines, ask them to hook you up with one of their guides that knows Round Lake and all of the lakes in the area backwards and forward!

The walleye opener was a success! You just can’t beat opening weekend in the Hayward area. The lakes were busy, the bait shops were packed, and the excitement of another fishing season is officially here. Hope everyone caught a few fish, made some memories, and enjoyed a great weekend in the Northwoods. 🎣
