Grant County Sheriff’s Office Reminds Riders of Wisconsin ATV/UTV Law Changes
GRANT COUNTY, Wis. – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is reminding ATV and UTV operators that several Wisconsin ATV/UTV regulatory changes took effect on June 1, 2026.
Key changes include:
SEAT BELTS:
Every occupant of a UTV, including the operator and all passengers, must wear a seat belt while the vehicle is in operation.
HELMETS / EYE PROTECTION:
Riders under age 18 must wear a U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmet.
Operators and passengers must use eye protection when operating or riding in an ATV or UTV that does not have a windshield.
TOWING RESTRICTIONS:
An ATV or UTV may not tow an object carrying a person on a trail or route.
Towing a person on frozen waters is allowed only at speeds of 10 mph or less.
Exceptions may apply in limited circumstances, including private property and certain disabled-vehicle situations.
WINDOW TINT:
UTV window tint is now regulated. Riders should ensure any tinted windows comply with the applicable visibility requirements.
PROPERTY DAMAGE:
A person who intentionally causes damage while operating an ATV or UTV may be held financially responsible for up to three times the cost to repair the damage, in addition to other applicable penalties.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds riders that ATV and UTV routes are established locally. A roadway is not open for ATV/UTV use unless the appropriate local authority has adopted an ordinance and the route is properly signed. Riders should also follow posted speed limits, operate sober, yield where required, and operate only on designated trails, routes, and authorized roadways.
ATVs and UTVs are an important recreational activity throughout Grant County, but safe operation is everyone’s responsibility. Wear your seat belt, use required safety equipment, ride sober, respect private property, and know the rules before you ride.
For the complete and current Wisconsin ATV/UTV regulations, riders should consult the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources ATV/UTV Regulations publication or contact the Wisconsin DNR. The DNR emphasizes that safe riding includes wearing helmets and seat belts, following operating laws, and never riding while impaired.
