Haven’t seen any loon for a few days now. I think it’s gone for the season. So close to a successful hatch. It is what it is. Will wait to see what happens next year.

Not sure about the loons. Thinking the baby is gone. Last photo I have is from July 25. I’ve been seeing a single loon on the lake most of the time. There have been mornings when 1 or 2 strange loons will land and 1 or 2 from the lake will swim to them and hang until they fly off.
No real territorial battles.

The baby loon has been thriving despite multiple eagle attacks. I have been taking pictures regularly. Posting those from this morning.

No loon on the nest when I went to work this morning, no loon on the nest when I came home. Just launched the paddle boat and spotted them. We have a baby, its name is Johnny. I am so excited. Hatched either late yesterday or early today. Took pictures, could have watched all afternoon. Such good parents.

Was a beautiful evening. Dave and I took the paddle boat out to check the out the loon nest. One was on the nest and the other was standing guard when it saw us too close to the nest.
Only 3-4 days til hatch time. I am so excited. The eagles are still a royal pain and after hatching, the baby will always be at risk. See less

Was out in the paddle boat this morning. The abandoned egg was laying off the loon nest. Still looked intact. The loon was on the platform nest when we went by, then got off. We were able to see the egg. Things seem to be going well. By my guess, hatching should be next week, around the 24th.
I’m excited.

The loons have been on the nest. I figure the egg was laid around May 26, so estimated hatch day would be June 24. Haven't seen an egg as a loon is on the nest when we have been near it.
The flies seem to have run their course, so nesting should be easier. The eagles continue to be relentless.

Afraid to get too excited. Went to check on loon things via kayak, and found a loon on the platform in the mud flats. So promising. The nest with the abandoned egg didn't have flies buzzing about, so maybe they are done. Hope so.
Anyway - fingers crossed.

Soooo - I finally got out in the kayak last weekend to check out the mud flats.
The loons did successfully build their own nest and there was an egg. There were still flies hanging around. Looks like the egg was abandoned, I haven't seen the loons nesting there.
The loon platform was empty, still had flies hanging out.

One loon was hanging around and wanted to know what we were doing there. Eventually both were together in the middle of the lake. Paddled around thinking maybe they nested again elsewhere - didn't see anything obvious. The loons were together swimming and fishing, no nesting behavior noted.

Oh well. Kinda bummed out.

Loon is FINALLY on the nest - Happy Dance. One step closer.
Last weekend I revised the nest and moved it to the mud flats.
