The loons have been on the nest. I figure the egg was laid around May 26, so estimated hatch day would be June 24. Haven't seen an egg as a loon is on the nest when we have been near it.
The flies seem to have run their course, so nesting should be easier. The eagles continue to be relentless.

Afraid to get too excited. Went to check on loon things via kayak, and found a loon on the platform in the mud flats. So promising. The nest with the abandoned egg didn't have flies buzzing about, so maybe they are done. Hope so.
Anyway - fingers crossed.

Soooo - I finally got out in the kayak last weekend to check out the mud flats.
The loons did successfully build their own nest and there was an egg. There were still flies hanging around. Looks like the egg was abandoned, I haven't seen the loons nesting there.
The loon platform was empty, still had flies hanging out.

One loon was hanging around and wanted to know what we were doing there. Eventually both were together in the middle of the lake. Paddled around thinking maybe they nested again elsewhere - didn't see anything obvious. The loons were together swimming and fishing, no nesting behavior noted.

Oh well. Kinda bummed out.

The loons have swam by the nest several times a day for several days. Have not seen them sit on it. Then yesterday morning I saw them in the mud flats. So sweet, both packing mud on the nest to build it up. Still too much water.
Walter, the loon expert had been through and talked to Pat. The male is our banded male, who returns. The female is not banded and unknown.
I don't care where they nest, would love a successful hatch.

So I fixed the one support that came off.
DJ was kind enough to stake out the nest for me, (in hope to keep it from swamping in the wind), looks like he used some trapping stakes.
The loons have been there twice already checking it out this morning. Heard them discussing it, love the cooing. Didn't see them on the nest though.
There still may be hope they will use the platform.

The wind broke the nest cover, needs a little more repair. Hope to get it out in time for nesting.
There were 3 loons on the lake yesterday, grateful the stray was gone after minimal fighting.

Been a few days of looking, haven’t seen them try it out. Big decisions take time. Lots to consider with previous eagle attacks, raccoon attack, weasel attack and all the fly repellent attempts. Nesting is not as easy as it should be.

Took advantage of the beautiful day and got the loon nest fixed up and launched. The loons were watching from a distance. Anxious to see if they try it out. The mud flats don’t offer much for nesting this year and I think the geese claimed it.
Would really love a baby loon this year, been too long.
