Triple Lakes Trail

Denali’s most rewarding day hikes long enough to feel like an adventure, but accessible for most hikers with steady pacing.

Distance: 9.5 miles one‑way (you can do a shorter out‑and‑back)

Elevation: ~1,000 ft of gain

Difficulty: Moderate mostly gentle terrain with a few steeper sections

Time: 4–6 hours depending on pace

Trail Style: Well‑defined, forested, with open views and lakeside sections

What makes this hike so beautiful is the variety. You move through quiet spruce forest, cross a suspension bridge over the Nenana River, and then reach three alpine‑style lakes tucked into the hills.

The views open and close as you go, giving you that perfect mix of peaceful woods and big Denali landscapes.

A lot of visitors come to Alaska hoping to see a moose and in summer, Horseshoe Lake in Denali is one of the best places to find them.

A short, scenic trail leads to calm water, quiet forest, and some of the most reliable wildlife moments in the park.

If you’re looking for that classic “Alaska moose sighting,” this is where it usually happens.

🐾 What is Horseshoe Lake?

A calm, scenic lake just inside Denali National Park shaped like a horseshoe, surrounded by spruce forest, and known for wildlife sightings (moose, beavers, ducks).

🚶‍♀️ How to Get There

• Start at the Denali Visitor Center
• Follow the Horseshoe Lake Trail
• It’s about 2 miles round‑trip, easy to moderate
• The trail drops down into the valley, so the hike back up is the only “work” part

🦌 Why It’s Famous for Moose

• Shallow water = perfect feeding habitat
• Lots of aquatic plants
• Quiet area away from heavy traffic
• Moose love early mornings and evenings here in summer

⭐ What’s Important for Visitors

• Keep a safe distance (moose look calm but can charge)
• Stay on the trail
• Bring water — the climb back up is short but steep
• Early morning or late evening gives the best chance of sightings
• Be patient wildlife moves on its own schedule

This is… our backyard in Alaska.

At our cabins, the Northern Lights often make an early appearance sometimes as early as late August.

While many associate the Aurora season with the coldest months, all you really need is darkness and clear skies.

In fact, late August and September often offer incredible displays, free from the extreme temperatures.

Summer is on the Horizon in Alaska 🏔️

While we’re still surrounded by snow, longer days and warmer temperatures are just around the corner.

These photos capture last summer when the landscape transforms, wildflowers bloom, and the midnight sun takes over.

Summer is the most rewarding time to visit Denali National Park, offering endless daylight for exploring, hiking, and experiencing Alaska at its fullest.

Moose-AKa’s Cabins provide a quiet, comfortable base to return to after a full day outdoors no matter the season.

Denali is the reason people travel from all over the world, yet in summer only about 10% see it completely clear.

These photos were taken in April, when the skies are crisp and your chances of seeing Denali are much higher.
