At the Old Sautee Store near Helen, Georgia you’ll find Georgia’s oldest continuously operating general store, a North Georgia landmark that has been welcoming customers since 1872. Sitting in the beautiful Sautee-Nacoochee Valley, the store still gives visitors a real look at what shopping was like generations ago. The original front section has been kept much like an old country store, with historic counters, shelves, displays, and antiques filling the room. The store also once housed the local post office, which was added in 1893 and remained part of the property for decades. Today, the newer sections are filled with Scandinavian sweaters, local jams and honey, candy, soaps, gifts, Baltic amber jewelry, and the store’s well-known Swedish Farmer Cheese. You can also see an old nickelodeon among the historic items inside. Next door, the Old Sautee Market serves sandwiches, fresh-baked treats, and old-fashioned bottled drinks. It’s a fun stop for shopping and lunch, but the preserved storefront and more than 150 years of history are what make this place so special.
