A few months ago we had the absolute pleasure of hosting musician Alan Williams while he filmed his newest music video at The Historic Conoco Station here in Helper. Alan came all the way from Massachusetts to film at our location.
He gave us a call after reading about Helper in the New York Times article and happened to be looking for a lonely desert gas station with a train rolling by… and found exactly that. 🚂⛽️ What started as a simple location rental turned into something much more it became a creative collaboration rooted in community, history, and art.
His song, "Somewhere There’s a Train", tells the story of longing to escape a dead-end town… and yet, ironically, he found connection, inspiration, and a sense of home right here in Helper.
We love when other artists truly appreciate the work Gary and the team have put into preserving and enhancing these old stations. There’s something special about seeing someone recognize the care, the craftsmanship, and that nostalgic feeling you get the moment you see it.
And while the stations may not pump gas anymore, they’re doing something far more meaningful! They are fueling creativity, preserving history, and creating spaces where stories are told and art is made. Turns out they serve quite a bit after all.
Take a few minutes to watch the video. It’s beautifully done.
I’ll share the link to his Substack (including our conversation about Helper’s revival) in the comments.
